About the Artist
I am a Southern California native who grew up with a fond appreciation of the arts. This
was encouraged by my father, an accomplished artist and cartoonist. I taught art in the Orinda Union School District for 17 years. After retirement, I returned to my original love: painting and drawing, which I continue to dabble in today.
I developed a keen interest in botanical watercolor painting under the guidance of
Catherine Watters. Through her, I learned botanical painting requires careful
observation and considerable precision. This art form has become a personal passion.
Each plant I paint has its own beautiful peculiarities that I attempt to capture in my
artwork. As a member of the Northern California Society of Botanical Artists, I have
exhibited my paintings at a variety of venues, from Alcatraz Island, UC Botanical
Garden and Mt. Tamalpais Florilegiums, to Filoli Garden in Woodside and UC Berkeley
Plants Illustrated exhibitions.
More recently, I have started learning Chinese brush painting from Pauline Tsui. She
has taught me to appreciate the attractive sophistication of this style of painting and also
the elegance of Chinese calligraphy.
